Op de DUTCH COMIC CON WINTEREDITIE 2019 interviewde ik een aantal leuke en opvallende cosplayers. Dit is het tweede interview in een serie. Een gesprek met CAPTAIN MARVEL.

Afgelopen weekend vond Comic Con Amsterdam plaats, hoewel de bordjes vermeldden dat het Comic Con Europe was toen ik zondagochtend het gebouw van de RAI binnenstapte. Ik was nog duf van het elke dag vloggen de afgelopen maand en een interview dat ik vrijdagavond laat had afgenomen, maar ik had erg veel zin in deze editie.
Tot mijn verbazing was het erg rustig en was de opzet van Comic Con dit keer behoorlijk klein. Er waren maar twee standhouders die comics verkochten, en bij de tafels van tekenaars en auteurs was het rustig. Er stonden geen rijen die je doorgaans ziet van mensen die een handtekening of illustratie wilden. De rest van de dag werd het niet veel drukker. Dat maakt mijn werk overigens meestal makkelijker, want ik had nu alle tijd om met de buitenlandse stripmakers te praten. Ik interviewde Nuno Plati voor een vlog. Deze Portugese stripmaker heeft onder andere Spider-Man-comics getekend en vertelde daar graag over. Daarna interviewde ik nog de Nederlandse illustrator Gerben den Heeten, die pin-ups tekent met een knipoog.
Meestal kom ik op de Comic Con bekenden tegen en de dag is daarom zo gevuld met bijpraten. Met Melvin van Dirtees dronk ik een kopje koffie bij zijn stand. Er liep een tienermeisje langs. Ze droeg een Captain Marvel T-shirt en een vest in de stijl van het uniform van deze superheld. Ik zie dat soort geeky kleding wel vaker en vind het een leuke manier waarop je je fan-zijn kunt uitdragen. Het hoeft immers niet altijd een T-shirt of cap te zijn.
Ik vroeg haar of ze een grote fan was, en het meisje zei: ‘Ik hou van haar.’ De comics had ze nog niet gelezen, maar ze was erg onder de indruk van de Captain Marvel uit de film die eerder dit jaar was uitgekomen met Brie Larson in de hoofdrol. ‘Het is bijna zeker dat ze lesbisch is!‘ zei het meisje verrukt. Dat was belangrijk voor haar, omdat ze zelf ook lesbisch is. Daarom vond ze Wonder Woman ook tof, want die is biseksueel. (Je kunt ook bijna niet anders dan wanneer je opgroeit op een eiland waar alleen maar vrouwen wonen.)
Nu is representatie al een tijdje een veelbesproken thema. Hoewel er in de meeste media tegenwoordig sprake lijkt van overkill, is het wel goed om te horen dat lesbische superhelden zo’n meisje een goed gevoel geven omdat ze zichzelf in het personage kan herkennen.
Met die overkill bedoel ik dat je bijna geen serie meer kunt kijken of er is wel sprake van LHBTI+-representatie, alsof men bezig is met een inhaalslag. Vaak zijn dit overigens nog personages waarbij hun seksuele voorkeur allesbepalend is, in plaats van dat het personage toevallig bijvoorbeeld een homoseksuele politieagent of superheld is. Wat dat betreft doen ze het bij Captain Marvel subtieler, al kun je daar weer tegenin brengen dat ze als personage onverslaanbaar is, en alles precies goed doet en geen fouten heeft. Een type dat we ook wel Mary Sue noemen. Veel representatie-personages zijn overigens praktisch smetteloos, alsof de makers ze geen slechte eigenschappen durven te geven. Dat zie ik ook veel terug in niet-blanke personages.
Maar dat heb ik het meisje allemaal maar niet verteld. Soms moet je gewoon knikken, je mond houden en koffiedrinken.
My buddy Melvin from @dirtees wanted to know who my favorite X-Man is. Well, I’ve always liked #rogue a lot.
Because:
1: She started out as a bad guy, er… bad girl and redeemed herself and became a hero.
2. She has great powers.
3. She looks great and has a sexy accent.
4. She kicked Captain Marvel’s ass. And if one holier than thou character should get her ass kicked every once in a while, it’s Carol Danvers.
Having said that, I also love X-Men: Storm, Kitty Pryde and Wolverine. If you’d put a gun to my head and make me choose between these mutants, I’d say Wolverine is my all time favorite. But since I don’t think anyone finds this matter important enough to threaten me with a gun, you’ll have to accept the answer that I love all four of the mentioned characters.
Soms wil ik jullie gewoon een paar mooie illustraties laten zien die ik in de bladen tegenkom. In de VPRO gids staat de rubriek KIJKEN waarin mensen uit de media aan het woord komen over hun kijkgedrag. Bij deze korte interviews staat altijd een mooie illustratie.

Tuesday March 12th I went to Henk’s Comic and Manga Store in Downtown Amsterdam to check out a particular issue of the True Believers series. However, that one was sold out, so I came home with a couple of other True Believers issues.
Captain Marvel, de nieuwste Marvelfilm, zag ik weliswaar al op 28 februari, tot 5 maart 15:00 uur mocht ik er niets over zeggen.
Net als alle andere journalisten had ik zwijgplicht opgelegd door Disney. Hoe dat precies zat, vertel ik in deze vlog. En wat ik van Captain Marvel vind natuurlijk. Is het een feministische film? En zo ja, is dat erg?
Kamala Khan is a sixteen-year-old Pakistani-American girl from Jersey City. She idolizes superheroes and Carol Danvers in particular. Danvers is a super heroine who calls herself Captain Marvel (she used to be Ms. Marvel). Kamala has a hard time fitting in: she is a Muslim and her parents try to bring her up according to their faith. Obviously, they don’t like their teenage girl to go to parties where boys attend as well and alcohol is being served. Her older brother spends his time praying all day, wearing traditional clothes, much to the chagrin of their father who’d rather see his son get a job. Kamala is living between two worlds, not really fitting in with either of them. Some of her white American school buddies, particularly Zoe, have no problem pointing out that she’s the odd one out.
When Kamala is bestowed superpowers, her life gets even stranger. All of a sudden she can change her appearance to whomever she wants, even her mother, and she can stretch her body to become very big or very small. She also heals a lot faster than before. Kamala becomes the new Ms. Marvel.
The way Kamala gets her powers is a bit vague. On a foggy night, she has a vision or hallucinates Carol Danvers, Iron Man and Captain America. These all-American characters start talking to her in Urdu and they bestow her new powers on her. How is never really explained and all this seems like some sort of divine intervention or magic. Being an atheist, I usually don’t like my superheroes mixed up with religion, and I prefer a more ‘scientific’ explanation on how superheroes get their powers.
Kamala is actually the fourth character called Ms. Marvel in the Marvel Comic books, but she’s the first Muslim character to headline her own book. This was presented as a big deal when the series started and is part of a larger strategy by the publisher to reach new readership outside the traditional white male demographic. For a while now, they particularly try to cater to minorities that until now had to play second fiddle in the world of superheroes. So Marvel came up with Black Hispanic Spider-Man Miles Morales, African-American hero Sam Wilson taking over as Captain America, and a whole reign of female superheroes who are either counterparts to known male heroes or pressed from a new mold that has an emancipatory flavor.
This is not to say that there were never any so-called minority superheroes in the Marvel Universe, quite the contrary actually, but in the last couple of years there has been more focus on such characters. Also, when it comes to the casting of Marvel characters in movies, some comic book characters that are white are now being portrayed by black or ethnic actors. Not all readers are happy with this trend.
But, politics aside, is this Ms. Marvel comic a good read? I think it is. Firstly, because Kamala and her co-stars are rounded and interesting characters. Writer and co-creator G. Willow Wilson takes the time to develop the character and sketch out the world she lives in. I like the fact that Kamala has to learn how to use her powers. In this first storyline learning to cope with these powers is an important factor. The story is also about trying to determine your identity, accepting who you are and not being afraid to show it. These are important issues for teens, and typical for coming-of-age stories. Then again these issues stay with us for the largest part of our lives. At first Kamala changes her appearance into a white, attractive blonde, just like Danvers. Later on, she decides the new Ms. Marvel might as well look Pakistani and her hero-self looks more like Kamala looks in real life. Personally I thought Wilson puts this theme of identity on a little thick, but then again: she does get the message across this way.
What makes this comic stand out from other Marvel titles to me is Adrian Alphona‘s art work and the coloring by Ian Herring. Alphona is a Canadian artist that is best known for the series Runaways. He created this new Ms. Marvel together with Wilson and editors Sana Amanat and Stephen Wacker. Alphona’s style is a blend of realism and a more cartoony way of drawing, and that works very nicely with a superhero that can stretch her body. Interestingly, it looks like his pencil drawings are scanned and not inked. Therefore there are no black areas in the artwork. Herring’s bright color scheme compliments the drawings perfectly, adding shade and a lively sort of mood.
Ms. Marvel vol. 1: No Normal collects Ms. Marvel (2014) issues 1-5 and material from Marvel Now! Point One #1. This collection won the 2015 Hugo Award for Best Graphic Story.
