Vanmorgen las ik een paar Nederlandse Wolverine comics en daar trof ik een mooie scène aan. Geschreven door Warren Ellis en getekend door Leinil Francis Yu.

Trees, volume 1: In Shadow by Warren Ellis (Transmetropolitan, The Authority) and Jason Howard is something else. Trees is a great science fiction story that presents a new perspective on the theme of alien-invasion. Like all good science fiction, Trees is an exploration of human nature in alienating and trying circumstances.
Ten years ago we discovered there is intelligent life in the universe: large black obelisks came down from the sky and landed on different places on earth. These big shapes wrecked their surroundings wherever they landed, destroying whole city blocks. Humanity panicked, but ‘the trees’ as people call them all but ignored humans all together. They don’t recognize us as intelligent or alive. Basically they just stand there, sometimes dumping toxic waste on their surroundings.
Now, ten years later, people have accepted these ‘trees’ and life goes on as well as possible. Writer Warren Ellis focuses on five locations on earth to show how the presence of the trees has changed our lives and how people adapted to them. In China a young artist arrives in the special cultural zone of a city under a tree and starts a journey of self-discovery. In Italy a young woman under protection of her boyfriend, the leader of a fascist gang that rules the city, meets an older man who will teach her survival skills so she can move up the social ladder. In Svalbard, one of the members of a research team is about to discover that the trees may not be dormant after all. The Somalian president starts placing artillery on the trees to demonstrate his military power, and in New York a Democrat is running for mayor in a city that’s been utterly transformed when the trees landed – Manhattan flooded when the trees landed on the cityscape.
In the first eight comics that are collected in Trees, Volume one: In Shadow, Ellis focuses most on the young artist, the Italian woman and the research team. Rightly so, because these three storylines concentrate on the characters and their development, whereas the other plotlines are more concerned with the politics of a world covered by the trees. At the moment they seem less interesting than the more personal storylines, but my guess is the political issues will be explored in later comic book issues.
I especially liked the story about Tian Chenglei, the young artist who is the new arrival in the city of Shu, a special cultural zone in China. Chenglei tries to find his place within a community of free thinkers, artists, homosexuals and transgenders and starts to explore his own sexuality.
Jason Howard‘s artwork has an energetic feel to it. Howard’s love for cross-hatching gives the art a sketchy kind of look, while at the same time he gives a detailed impression of the scenery. All major locations in the book have their own distinctive look and feel, and these settings really sell the story. For the facial expressions Howard seems to use a sort of short-hand: they sometimes are lacking subtlety.
At first glance the cover of Trees reminded me of the film poster of David Lynch’s Eraserhead with Jack Nance wearing that goofy haircut, but although the trees are weird, Ellis’s story isn’t as strange as any of Lynch’s films. Trees isn’t less fascinating, though.

Welke strip(s) is/zijn je favoriet en lees je nu nog steeds?
Er zijn belachelijk veel uitermate getalenteerde auteurs werkzaam in de stripwereld, maar als ik moet kiezen, dan valt de keuze op The Authority, een superheldenteam gecreëerd door Warren Ellis en Bryan Hitch. Naast Ellis hebben Mark Millar, Grant Morrison en Garth Ennis zich ook tegen The Authority aan bemoeid.
Waarom is/zijn dit je favoriete strip(s)? Wat vind je er zo goed aan?
The Authority is een titel waarin het superheldengenre tot een logische conclusie wordt gebracht: zeven mensen met superkrachten besluiten de wereld te verbeteren op zeer proactieve wijze: ze beginnen met het verslaan van maniakale superschurken, een invasie van buitenaardse wezens uit een parallel universum en God (een buitenaardse piramide die het zonnestelsel heeft geschapen en na een sabbatical van een paar miljard jaar de aarde wil zuiveren van ongedierte). Maar al snel krijgen ze het aan de stok met regeringen en plegen ze een coup: ze zetten de regering van de VS af en nemen de macht over.
The Authority schopt kont op meerdere niveaus: de personages zijn interessante variaties op bekende helden die daardoor een heel nieuwe kant verkennen: Apollo en the Midnighter zijn Superman en Batman, maar een stuk mededogenlozer en ze zijn ook nog eens een setje! The Engineer is een dame die haar bloed heeft ingeruild voor nanobots, een soort Iron Man met Extremis krachten. Jeroen Thornedike is The Doctor, een super-shamaan en tevens de enige Nederlandse superheld die je serieus kan nemen (al is hij een heroïne-junk).
Naast interessante personages is de thematiek van The Authority erg boeiend: alle goede bedoelingen in de wereld voorkomen niet dat wanneer de ambities verder reiken dan het beschermen van de aarde tegen superschurken en aliens, The Authority verworden tot een soort fascistoïde club die soldaten die tegen hun in de strijd worden gegooid ziet als collatoral damage. With great power comes great responsibility, en The Authority kan zoveel verantwoordelijkheid uiteindelijk niet aan. En passant veroorzaakt The Authority een soort Tea Party-reactie en worden ze tijdelijk vervangen door een door de G7 aangestelde groep superhelden die wel naar de pijpen van de macht willen dansen. En in The Authority zijn superhelden celebrities, wat ook nog de nodige complicaties met zich meebrengt, zoals wanneer The Doctor trouwt met een popster en daardoor in een lastige scheiding terecht komt.
Wanneer kwam je er voor het eerst mee in aanraking? En wat deed dat met je?
Na Transmetropolitan was ik benieuwd naar ander werk van Ellis en na de eerste vier comics was ik verkocht. De eerste superschurk waar The Authority tegen vechten is Kaizen Gamorra, een Mandarin-achtige dictator met een eigen eilandstaat. The Midnighter weet het gevecht te beëindigen door het transdimensionale ruimteschip van The Authority bovenop het eiland en Kaizen te parkeren. The Authority is een soort intelligente blockbuster in comicvorm, vol met what-the-fuck momenten en met grootse ambities. Jammer genoeg is de titel inmiddels een beetje doodgebloed, maar de eerste drie volumes zijn zeker de moeite van het lezen waard.
